Anthologies is our quarterly zine with themed issues. We accept and publish voluntary contributions from members of our community. Themes are set by our community and everyone is encouraged to interpret a theme in their own way. Below are some things we think you should know as a potential contributor. Please email us if you have questions not already addressed here.

Could I have a printed copy? Not at the moment, sorry. Anthologies is published digitally and we hope to make print runs feasible as we grow.

What genres do we accept? We welcome contributions across any literary genre, including fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, prose, script-writing and much more.

Is there a word limit? We do not have a specific word count you have to meet. Your contribution might be a four-line poem or a thousand-word essay. Write what works for you; writing doesn’t need to be long to be meaningful. With that said, we recommend contributions do not exceed more than 4,000 words.

In what format should I submit? We would prefer submissions as a single markdown file. More technically, please only use basic markdown syntax. Even more technically, please download our template file and fill it in according to our editing guide.

We do not want technicalities to become obstacles for contributors, so we accept any variation on our submission requirements so long as you send us a title and subtitle along with your contribution and your exact byline. Ideally, we prefer not to receive page layout document formats like docx or pages but we are willing to work around these. We do, however, discourage PDFs. Pseudonyms, on the other hand, are welcome.

When will my contribution be published? Once you submit to us, one of our reviewers will get back to you about accepting your contribution. Subsequently, it will be published when the next issue of Anthologies comes out. We publish our zine as issues and not as individual articles. Zines are published quarterly, in March, June, September and December.

How have you not brought up AI yet? This is a writers’ collective so we understandably do not allow completely or partially AI-generated writing. Indeed we would request that you do not use AI at any stage of your writing. Unless absolutely necessary, we also request that you do not use AI for generating your artwork (see below). There are plenty of artists out there who would only be too glad to allow their work to be used with due credit.

Can I submit artwork? Absolutely. Please make sure you send us your artwork along with your submission and any guidelines about how specifically you would like us to publish it. If your artwork simply includes inline pictures, you can include them in your markdown file as per usual. If you do neither, we will place the artwork as we see fit. We request that you try not to send us many artwork that are entirely aesthetic in the interest of keeping this website eco-friendly.

Who holds rights to my contribution? You do. By send us your writing you give us the right to publish it in full and in part (e.g. for publicity or as excerpts) and to edit it as required for Anthologies. You do not give us full or partial rights to own your work. We request that you consider publishing with us exclusively. However, should you choose to publish on your own website and syndicate it to us, we welcome that as well. In that case, please make sure you let us know your syndication link. It is absolutely essential that your work is original and yours (and your collaborators’) alone.

→ How we accept contributions

We are committed to publishing all contributions from our members. We interpret themes for our issues liberally to allow for a diverse interpretation of ideas and recognise that writings may boldly and passionately confront troubling issues. However, we reserve the right to reject contributions that clearly fall outside the scope of a theme, as well as writing that is clearly offensive or designed to encourage hate and exclusion.

We are not professional editors and cannot promise detailed feedback for every submission. But it is likely you will find someone in our group who is more than happy to give you feedback or help you brainstorm.

We do not accept external contributions.

Please note that WWC are a self-organising community. We are not a literary publication and we do not work for profit. Contributions are voluntary and unpaid.

We run Anthologies and the wider WWC as a labour of love, intended to be an aid to people of all creative dispositions – from people who write occasionally to those who write daily.

While we request contributors to publish their contributions to Anthologies exclusively, we welcome – and encourage – anyone and everyone to also write about our themes on and for their own websites.

When you are ready to submit, please email your writing, preferrably in markdown, to submissions@webwriterscollective.com preferrably with the flag [CONTRIBUTION] in the subject along with your name (or just click on the email link above and we will fill it in for you).

At any and all points in your creative process, feel free to brainstorm, ask questions, share drafts, and otherwise collaborate in the group chat.

While we all write for the web, submissions do not need to be about the web. In fact, we encourage you to interpret themes creatively. If you have an idea that feels good to you, it’s likely it is right for Anthologies.
